Why Attic Insulation Matters
Insulation is one of the most cost effective home improvements available. It reduces energy bills and helps prevent harmful pollutants from entering your home. Having your attic properly insulated also helps to protect the health and value of your roof, as well as reducing humidity levels in your home, which can cause structural damage. Why Attic Insulation Matters
Whether your home is new or old, if you’re noticing high utility bills or if you haven’t been in the attic recently, it may be time to add more insulation to your attic. Insulation works by preventing hot air from seeping through your ceiling in the summer and cold air from getting into your home in the winter, so it’s crucial to keep it well-maintained to save you money year-round on heating and cooling.
There are a few different types of insulation: fiberglass batt, cellulose and foam. Fiberglass batt is the most common and can be installed quickly, typically within a few days. Foam insulation is also quick to install and creates an airtight seal that is more durable than fiberglass. Blown-in insulation—also known as loose-fill—is made of cellulose, mineral wool or fiberglass and is blown into the attic using a special machine. It can be spread more evenly than fiberglass batt, and is a great choice for older homes that have uneven attic insulation.
Whether your attic insulation is cellulose, fiberglass or foam, you can check to see if it needs to be replaced by heading up there and taking a look. If you can easily see the attic floor joists, it’s time to add more insulation; however, if your insulation is piled up or well above the joists, you probably don’t need to add any additional insulation.
