Attic and Wall Insulation Checklist for Homeowners
Insulation is one of the best investments a spray foam insulation can make. Upgrading insulation helps reduce heating and cooling bills, improves comfort, and prevents rodent infestations and structural damage. But even after a professional inspection, homeowners should periodically check their own attic and walls to ensure they are in good shape. These inspections should also help detect problems and issues before they worsen.
Homeowners should use a ladder and wear a mask when inspecting their attic. Fiberglass insulation can easily break apart into sharp shards that can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation. Those shards can also become airborne and infiltrate living areas, making them dangerous to your health.
How to Choose the Right Insulation for Your Attic Renovation
During an attic inspection, look for air leaks and gaps. Be sure to seal all openings and penetrations between conditioned space and the attic, such as electrical boxes, vents, and plumbing fixtures. Sealing these leaks prevents warm air from entering during the winter and cool air from entering in summer, thereby improving energy efficiency.
In addition, make sure to properly store items in the attic to avoid pressuring and reducing the effectiveness of the insulation. For a more extensive inspection, shut off all attic ventilation and shine a flashlight around the ceiling while a partner looks outside to observe any gaps or other areas of potential air leakage.
Wall insulation can be checked in a similar fashion by touching the walls. A cold touch indicates adequate insulation, while a warmer feeling can indicate the need for more insulation.
